For anyone thinking of volunteering, sightseeing, trekking, or just out looking for some fun adventure travel in Ladakh, India; here is some good-to-know info about the place, the people, and what you can do help as a volunteer or traveler.
Ladakh lies in the Himalayan Mountainous region of India, in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. With 60,000 sq. ft. of mountainous harsh terrain, home to a population of just under 300,000. This sparsely populated and incredibly beautiful region has over 900 schools dotting the landscape. A majority of them being isolated, remote and cut-off for six months of a year due to harsh winters, these remote villages and schools need exposure, support and attention from the outside world.
Ladakh is an exotic travel destination for adventure and culture seekers worldwide and therefore survives only on tourism.
Voluntourism programs are designed to use volunteering to help bring much needed focus to these schools and villages in remote Ladakh.
Here are a few ways anyone can help as a volunteer or traveler in Ladakh:
A lot of rural schools in Ladakh have extremely limited infrastructure, and what exists leaves a lot to be desired. From repair work, to bringing in classroom furniture, to building playgrounds for these little kids, there is a lot that you can do.
Infrastructure projects are very need based and also depend on the availability of resources and funds. So, get in touch with us if you are interested in helping us upgrade and repair these far flung schools.
We are on a mission to ensure that every child of Ladakh be given an opportunity to read, and be exposed to the wonderful, joyous world of books and imagination. We have setup over 100 libraries in some of the most ignored schools of Ladakh and need your help setting up a lot more. Pitch into help deliver and setup up a library each in these schools.
Children of our schools benefit greatly from exposure to volunteers through interactions and exposure to their unique skills. We would like to conduct exposure workshops on various art and craft forms, theatre, music, discovering science, life skills or even health and hygiene workshops. Your unique skills can provide tremendous benefits to these schools which otherwise have very limited exposure to the outside world. These programs can be customized as per the relevance and need of the remote schools. This literally mean almost any skill you have will be of use and could help benefit these people in some way.
There are a multitude of amazing cultural and tourism treats to check out in this fascinating place… more on that in our next article. Stay tuned
